Archive hard copy drawings can either be scanned or transferred manually into electronic format, to allow ease of data storage or to enable clients to progress design works on computer workstation, when extending or developing existing buildings or structures.
Scanning produces a 'picture' of the hard copy data, which may be of general use for archiving purposes but may not really be suitable for use with computer aided drawing (CAD) software or for developing design proposals.
If the data is to be used for further development or design works, as opposed to general storage or archiving purposes, manual transfer to electronic format would be the preferred option, as all dimensioned data is converted directly into computer aided drawing (CAD) format. By using the exact detail dimensions on the existing hard copy drawing, an exact electronic copy can be re-drawn for subsequent design and development works by engineers or architects.
In many cases, a combination of scanned and manually input data can be used, in order to provide an 'intelligent' electronic drawing, for the subsequent development of design proposals on computer workstation.
